Matemático, astrónomo y físico holandés. Fue el primero en usar un péndulo para regular un reloj (1656). Inventó un método para tallar y pulir lentes de telescopio y usó sus telescopios para descubrir la verdadera forma de los anillos de Saturno (1659). Desarrolló explicaciones de la reflexión y refracción basadas en el principio de frentes de onda secundarios, llamado hoy principio de Huygens. Desarrolló la teoría ondulatoria de la luz (1678) y también contribuyó a la ciencia de la dinámica. Su trabajo sobre cuerpos en rotación condujo a soluciones de problemas que involucran la oscilación de un péndulo y el movimiento circular uniforme. También fue el primero en determinar la aceleración debida a la gravedad.
